Syavash Rastani was born in a well-known family of musicians in Teheran, Iran. At the age of 7 he started learning the tombak, a Persian percussion instrument under Mohammad Hashemi in Cologne. After studying the traditional techniques, also with master Behnam Samani he started experimenting with various instruments from diverse music styles developing a modern way of playing the tombak.
Syavash Rastani has been performing in prestigious halls and festivals like in “Musica Sacra International”, “Gaude Mater Festival” and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He is a member of the traditional Persian “Ensemble Barbad” as well as in “Maryam Akhondy’s Paaz”, where he uses the tombak in unconventional ways. This musical approach has offered him the possibility to tour as a percussionist in Europe and West Africa and find new ways of performing.
In 2015 he recorded a Live-CD with the WDR, which was live broadcasted on the radio. In 2016 he recorded a second Live-CD, this time during the annual concert series “Sya Live” that he organizes himself. In these concerts he presents new fusions of the tombak with other instruments. This CD also includes the Duo with the classical guitarist Ptolemaios Armaos. The Duo performs in festivals, presenting a mix of traditional and classical musical cultures.
